A dash of perspective
Every plot in a cemetery has one thing in common, other than the obvious.
Written on each headstone, between the year of birth and the year of death, there's a dash. One day, sooner or later—hopefully later—the lives of everyone you know and love, including yourself, will be represented by that dash on a headstone.
So, what will that little dash mean for everything you've experienced, achieved, lost and gained in your life? What does that dash mean for your parents and grandparents? In many ways, you also carry their legacy as memories of their time. Unless their stories, and your own, are documented in some way, such as with a private autobiography, they will disappear within a couple of generations. All of those memories, life lessons, anecdotes, and experiences will vanish as if they never existed. Gone, forever!
Private autobiographies
I have dedicated my career to ghostwriting life stories as privately published autobiographies. My goal is to preserve legacies by ghostwriting life-legacy books about seniors’ lives. Family trees and ancestry research can tell us who our ancestors were. But this won't tell us about the lives they led, the unique life journeys and experiences they had, and the decisions they made. Their life choices—often made against the odds and in the face of adversity—will lead to the birth of thousands of people with their own life stories to tell.
You hold a treasure chest of unique memories from your childhood—and even your parents' childhood—that are invaluable to your children and their children, right down the line. You have the keys to the kingdom of living memory that can enable your grandchildren and great-grandchildren to understand their full origin story.
That dash on a headstone won't tell anyone about your life; but a life legacy book will.
There's enormous fulfilment and satisfaction in sharing your life as a ghostwritten life legacy book. Tell your kids all about your life before they were born. Share the dreams and escapades of your adolescence, your time in college, starting a career, romance, travel, and everything in between that they don't know.
Value of life writing
Rediscover your life's journey and understand what it has all meant. Look back and review decades of your life to see why things happened—when, where, and how—in context to the whole picture. This is why I ghostwrite and publish autobiographies for seniors—because seniors are in the best position to reflect on their lives and gain the most benefit from this process. I also specialize in life writing for seniors because this is where I can make the biggest difference as a journalist. Having interviewed hundreds of seniors, I've witnessed healing and joy in this process. And when they read the books and articles I've written about their lives, there is pride and satisfaction as well.
Preserve your life story for yourself and others
Your legacy should live longer than one lifetime. Yet, the vast majority of people will never be the subject of a book, documentary, or TED Talk about their lives. So-called ordinary people live lives that are more relatable than the contents of celebrity lifestyle autobiographies and memoirs we find in bookstores.
This is what I do: help you make sense of your life's journey as a celebrity-style autobiography, written in your voice, with your name on the cover, which you can share with your family and friends in print and e-book forms.
There's more value in a private, ghostwritten autobiography because authors are not trying to sell their life stories. Instead, they're sharing their life stories for personal insight and for the great value this can offer friends and family.
Enable future generations to learn about their heritage because your story matters to them and should never be reduced to a dash on a headstone.
